Cragieburn stadium funding boost

Craigieburn Sports Stadium’s upgrade received a shot in the arm last week with the state government tipping in $5 million for three multi-sports courts.

The project is one of dozens to be funded in the second round of the government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program.

The sports stadium project, formerly the Craigieburn Leisure Centre, is expected to cost $12 million.

The Hume council committed $7 million to the project in its 2021-22 budget.

Hume mayor Joseph Haweil said the council welcomed the latest funding win.

“Craigieburn Sports Stadium has long been a wonderful place for our community to connect, thrive, get involved and stay active,” he said.

“As our community continues to grow, so does the need for quality facilities for our residents.

“Council would like to thank the Victorian government, in particular [Community Sport Minister] Ros Spence, for providing this funding which will allow a total investment of $12 million into upgrading this facility.

“This project is an exciting opportunity for our community, particularly for our local clubs and associations.

“It is a significant investment in Craigieburn, which will provide job opportunities during construction, plus permanent roles, and encourage more people to participate in local sport, close to home.”

The redeveloped Craigieburn Sports Stadium will include three new multi-sports courts (making a total of eight multi-sports courts), the relocation of the outdoor community multi-sports court, toilets and change rooms and a new carpark with about 80 new spaces.

Community Sport Minister Ros Spence said: “These important projects will deliver local jobs in the short term and top-notch facilities for passionate sports people for decades to come.”

“It’s vital that clubs can provide modern facilities for existing and prospective members – whether they are players, coaches, administrators or supporters.”

There has not been an announcement as to when works will begin.
