Hume is set for a jobs boost with 460 prison cells to be built in Campbellfield.
Around 20 local manufacturing jobs will be created under a $41 million state government contract for the construction of prefabricated steel modular cells for five Victorian prison sites.
Work on plumbing, electrical, furniture and fixtures will be undertaken in Fleetwood Building Solutions in Campbellfield before the cells are moved to either Barwon Prison, Marngoneet Correctional Centre, Middleton Prison Hopkins Correctional Centre or Metropolitan Remand Centre where the rest of the cell blocks and supporting infrastructure will be created.
The new cells are part of the Victorian government’s $8 billion investment to meet future demand in prisons and deliver programs to break the cycle of reoffending and keep people out of prison.
Broadmeadows MP and chair of the Broadmeadows Revitalisation Board, Frank McGuire, said the contract would help provide jobs for locals.
“Much of the manufacturing will take place in Campbellfield, so we will improve the availability of jobs for local people in plumbing, electrical skills and making fixtures and furniture.
“This will be made all the more impactful through the work of Broadmeadows Revitalisation Board.”
