A group of kids have joined forces to paint a bright mural on an Epping fence to alert drivers to a nearby mob of kangaroos.
Grace, 13, Liam, 12, Nash, 8, Kole, 2, Georgie, 7, and Liam, 4, painted the mural depicting a kangaroo and the words ‘kangaroos crossing’ onto Tanya Lay’s back fence, which faces Findon Road.
Ms Lay said the children are the kids and grandkids of the members of a wildlife rescue group known as the Boral Mob Warriors.
She said a mob of about 130 kangaroos live in the area near Boral Quarries.
“We thought we needed to highlight our beloved mob and remind drivers to slow down because unfortunately, we have had to pull many of our mob members and their joeys off the road,” Ms Lay said.
“We don’t have street lighting or even a footpath on our stretch of road.”
Ms Lay said the mural also pays tribute to her kids’ favourite kangaroo, Heff.
She said Heff used to sit at a nearby bus stop every day.
“The kids played a big part in Heff’s burial because he was so special to us. The kids made a special hessian covering with drawing and love hearts then helped cover him up,” she said.
“The kids really just wanted to show their appreciation for Heff as he was well known by locals around here for so long.”
