Craigieburn Eagles fall in first final

Craigieburn Eagles will have to win two games on the road if they are to make the Big V men’s division 2 grand final series.

The Eagles got off to the worst possible start against Southern Peninsula Sharks, to trail in the semi-final series 1-0.

While game one was at home for the Eagles, it didn’t help them at all.

The Eagles trailed by nine points after a high scoring first quarter.

It was an even second quarter, but the Sharks extended the margin out to 12 points.

It was a better start to the second half. The Eagles won the quarter 25-20 and went into the last quarter trailing by seven points and with momentum.

But the last quarter would be the Eagles worst, outscored 31-9.

In a quarter riddled with turnovers, the Eagles failed to score in the last three and half minutes, allowing the Sharks to blow out the margin.

Overall, the Sharks had 29 more field goal attempts, showing their dominance.

Damon Smith top scored with 29 points, shooting at 64 per cent from the field.

Only Liam Watt with 21 points also scored double figures.

The Sharks need to win game two on Saturday night to take the series all the way.

Game three will be on Sunday if needed.

It was better news for the Eagles youth league men’s division 2 side, which won its semi-final against Chelsea Gulls, 97-68.
