Labor set to win in Whittlesea, Hume

The sitting Labor MPS in Whittlesea and Hume look set to be re-elected, with early figures showing strong first preference votes for Labor in all five seats.

The outer northern electorates of Yan Yean, Thomastown, Mill Park and Broadmeadows appear to be following a statewide swing towards Labor, giving Premier Daniel Andrews a second consecutive term in office.

In Yan Yean – a marginal seat prior to the election – Labor’s Danielle Green has picked up 56 per cent of first preference votes, with more than a third of the vote counted.

The Liberal Party was without a candidate in Yan Yean after Meralyn Klein was asked to resign from the party last week.

Ms Klein contested the election as an independent but was named as the Liberal Party’s candidate on the ballot papers because her resignation came after the close of nominations.

Ms Klein has picked up 26 per cent of the first preference vote so far.

In Thomastown, 28 per cent of votes have been counted so far, with Bronwyn Halfpenny securing 63 per cent of first preference votes.

Bronwyn Halfpenny will be re-elected in Thomastown (supplied).

Mill Park’s Lily D’Ambrosio – who has represented the electorate since 2002 – has 65 per cent of first preference votes, with a third of votes counted.

In Broadmeadows, sitting MP Frank McGuire has 71 per cent of first preference votes, with a 23 per cent of votes counted.

Ros Spence is expected to retain the seat of Yuroke, with 60 per cent of first preference votes so far. Just over 25 per cent of votes have been counted.
