After years of waiting to become an AFL player, Madison Prespakis didn’t have to wait long on Tuesday to hear her name called at the AFLW draft.
The Sunbury Lions and Calder Cannons star was taken at pick three by Carlton. Prespakis had elected to be selected by only Melbourne-based clubs, meaning pick three was the first pick she could be selected. Geelong had the first two picks
Prespakis had long been touted as a possible number one pick, having dominated the under-18 competition for a number of years.
This year she shared the TAC Cup best and fairest award and most valuable player award at national championships with number one pick Nina Morrison.
Speaking in July, Prespakis said it was crazy that she could soon be an AFLW player.
“Since I was a little girl I’ve always wanted to play AFL,” she said.
“I don’t care what colour I’ll be wearing. It would mean the world to me.”
Carlton AFLW coach Daniel Harford said Prespakis will strengthen the Blues’ line-up in 2019.
“We couldn’t be happier to secure Maddy. Not only is she a proven ball-winner, but she has a super footy IQ and makes good decisions with ball in hand,” Harford said.
“Playing for Melbourne Uni in the VFLW competition, she averaged more than 25 disposals and also managed to hit the scoreboard, so we can’t wait to see her in the navy blue next year.”
