Calder Cannons, Northern Knights bow out

The season has come to an end for the Calder Cannons and Northern Knights in the TAC Cup.

Playing for a spot in finals in the wildcard round, both lost to teams they had finished higher than after the regular season.

The Cannons went down in a thriller to the Geelong Falcons on Saturday.

Not much separated the two teams throughout the day, with the Cannons leading by nine points heading into the final break.

The Falcons kicked the first three goals of the final quarter to hit the front before the Cannons got one of their own to reduce the margin to a point.

Mitchell Podhajski levelled the scores, with the Falcons hitting the front again in the final minute of the game.

The Falcons hung on to win 8.8 (56)-8.7 (55).

Jake Riccardi and Curtis Taylor kicked two goals each for the Cannons, with Lachlan Sholl named their best.

It was a tough day for the Knights against Greater Western Victoria Rebels.

The Rebels dominated the contest after quarter time, kicking 13 goals to two, to win 14.7 (91)-3.4 (22).

There were no multiple goal kickers for the Knights, with Sunny Brazier, Joshua D’Intinosante and Oscar White kicking a goal each.

Samuel Philip and Adam Carafa were named the Knights’ best.
