A unisex changeroom will be built at Whittlesea’s AF Walker Recreation Reserve in an effort to boost female participation in sport.

The state government has provided $100,000 for the new changeroom under its Country Football and Netball Program, with AF Walker Recreation Reserve one of 25 facilities to share in more than $2.2 million in the program’s latest round of funding.

Yan Yean MP Danielle Green said the addition of a unisex change room would help more residents use the ground, whether as players, coaches, umpires or volunteers.

“Footy and netball clubs are the heart and soul of local towns. Unfortunately, many are struggling with rundown pavilions or grounds,” she said.

“This boost will go a long way to helping Whittlesea cater for the growing number of people keen to get involved in grassroots sport, providing more opportunities for locals to get active and play the sport they love.”

The government has also provided the Whittlesea Football Club with $18,000 to renovate its scoreboard and improve its clubrooms.

The money will be used to modernise the existing scoreboard, create a new barbecue area, make repairs to the front verandah and install a new window shutter in the canteen.

The club, which was formed more than 120 years ago, has 700 active members.
