Hume City enjoys a winning feeling

Hume City has continued its strong recent form, scoring a late winner to take the full points over Port Melbourne in NPL Victoria soccer.

With its early season struggles now seemingly behind it, Hume has lost one game in its past seven to slowly push its way up the ladder.

Coach Nick Hegarty said the mood around the club.

“We’ve been enjoying the last couple of months especially, but the morale has been there all season despite not getting the results,” Hegarty said.

“It’s nice that the hard work, the effort, and the quality are shining through and we’re getting away from a danger situation at the start of the season. Now we can hopefully start looking forwards a bit, but we’re not resting on our laurels.”

Both teams had their chances early in the game, with Hume City forced to make an early change when John Cofie had to be substituted with a back injury after 15 minutes.

The deadlock couldn’t be broken in the opening 45  minutes, but Hume began to take control after the break as it pushed forwards strongly and created plenty of chances.

City eventually got on the board through substitute striker Tom Barforosh, who was able to get on the end of a good cross from Brad Blumenthal to head home the decisive goal.

It was his first goal for the club.

From there Hume was diligent in defence as it held on to the lead.

Hegarty said his players were steeling themselves for a big challenge this Friday against Bentleigh Greens.

“We’ve got to be confident, but … going down to Kingston Heath to play Bentleigh on a Friday night is probably one of the hardest fixtures in the league,” he said.

“We know they’re a quality opposition and it’s a difficult place to go, but we’ll go in there quietly confident.

“We’ll make sure we prepare well … we’re probably one of the form teams of the competition so we’ve now got to show that that is the case.”
