Roxburgh Park tops in a tough battle

Roxburgh Park got its second win of the Western Region and Essendon District Women’s Football League, but not without a fight.

Playing Tarneit, which is yet to win a match, neither side could get any real advantage.

The Magpies led by nine points at quarter-time and that had been reduced to three points at the main break.

Tarneit hit the front in third quarter and could have been further ahead if it had have kicked straight – it led by five points at three quarter time, despite having five more scoring shots.

The Magpies kicked the only goal of the final quarter to seal a 4.2 (26)-3.7 (25) win.

Speaking before the win, Magpies coach David Talintyre said it had been a tough season so far.

“The league is not really even,” he said.

“There are a few strong teams and then there’s a big drop off to other teams. Playing ladder leaders Keilor was a real eye opener.”

The Magpies, who are in their second season, are one of the side’s towards the bottom of the ladder.

They are sitting in ninth, but have been competitive against sides around them on the ladder.

Talintyre said this season was about development for the team.

“It’s a new season with a new team,” he said.

“We had six girls go to Glenroy. There are about 10 girls from last season that are still playing with us this year.

“We had three girls make their debut against VU Spurs. Most of the girls are still learning the game.

“A lot of the new girls have come from a netball background and you can really tell that.”

The Magpies have 25 or 26 players on their list, but are still looking for more players.

Talintyre said they were lacking was experience, but despite some big losses the girls were still eager to train and play.

“They are really good team,” he said. “Boys would drop their heads, girls keep going.

“It’s a new team getting to know each other and getting better and better each game.”

It was a tough weekend for Craigieburn, which lost to Keilor 35.5 (215)-0.1 (0).
