‘Outing Disability’ opens in Brimbank

A new exhibition at Brimbank Community and Civic Centre aims to improve understanding of the struggles faced by LGBTQI people who are also living with a disability.

The series of photographs by international photographer Belinda Mason – titled ‘Outing Disability – is part of partnerships between Brimbank council, Family Planning NSW, GoWest and the Midsumma Festival, and it’s visiting Melbourne for the second time after a successful exhibition in Maribyrnong in 2016.

Family Planning NSW senior health promotion officer (disability) Ee-Lin Chang said the exhibition has had rave reviews since it opened at Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 2014.

“Wherever we take it, people always find it very eye-opening, and we have a very broad range of stories … so it appeals to a wide range of the community.”

Ms Chang said it was important to tell and hear the stories of LGBTQI people who are living with a disability.

“We started with 16 stories, all very different and, over the years, we’ve added others to now have 23 stories to tell,” she said.

Outing Disability will run until February 3.

There are daily viewings, between 10am and 11am and 1-2pm, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
