Wallan Panthers get a hot Scott for Big V

Wallan Panthers have has announced their first signing for their women’s side ahead of their inaugural Big V basketball season.

Just weeks after being accepted into the competition, the Panthers have named Sarah Scott as part of the team.

Scott, 23, will bring more than 150 games worth of Big V senior and youth league experience to the side.

Panthers coach Warren Taylor said Scott was a perfect addition to the side.

“A smart and talented guard, Sarah has been working out with us for the past year to develop her game and is a perfect fit with our group,” he said.

“Sarah always has been an outstanding defensive player, but the development in her offensive game over the past couple of years has been really strong.

“She will be such an asset to us at both ends … her experience and success at the higher level will also be valuable as we kick off in Big V.”

Taylor has seen what Scott can do first hand, firstly at Craigieburn and then Hume City Broncos. Taylor has coached both Big V clubs to multiple championships.

After playing her junior basketball at Craigieburn, Scott moved to Hume City to further her career.

She made her debut for the Broncos’ youth league side in 2010 and won the side’s most valuable player award the next season.

She played a season with Ringwood, before coming back to the Broncos to play alongside her sister, 300-game Big V player Jacinta Scott.

Under Taylor, Sarah played in two women’s state championship titles for the Broncos.

“In 2013, Sarah played in both youth and state champ and was part of her first Big V championship,” Taylor said.

“The next year Sarah focused more on state champ, playing the full season and winning her second title in as many years.”

Scott juggled playing in both Big V youth league and state championship Broncos sides in 2015, winning the youth league division 1 title and making the state league championship grand final.

This year she just focused playing in the youth league side, winning her second club youth league MVP award.

Scott said she was excited to take to the court with the Panthers, having trained with them for the past year.

Under the rules of Country Basketball League, in which the Panthers play, Scott hasn’t been able to play with the side previously because of where she lives.

Scott said she was also excited to play under Taylor again.

The Panthers are holding tryouts for their Big V team. Sessions will be held on November 14 and 21 from 7pm at R B Robson Stadium, 48 Bentinck St, Wallan.
