Donnybrook wins opening NWMCA Luscombe Shield stoush

Here’s quick look at the week’s results from the NWMCA, Premier Cricket and DVCA.

Donnybrook won the battle of two of the newly promoted teams in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association.

The two sides, which played in the Vic Kyte Shield last season, faced off in the opening round of George Luscombe Shield on Saturday.

Winning the toss, Donnybrook made the most of it’s over making 5-193. Gurwinderjeet Singh top scored with an unbeaten 82.

Nitin Chowdhury provided good support, making 40 before being run out.

In reply, the Lions were bowled out for 161.

Surainder Brar took four wickets for Donnybrook.

Gladstone Park has had to wait for its season to begin after its season opener against Buckley Park was abandoned before a ball was bowled due to the ground not being ready.

In the Vic Kyte Shield, Gowenbrae defeated the Northern Lions.

Plenty Valley came face to face with rampaging Box Hill skipper Meg Lanning and came out second best in the opening round of women’s Victorian Premier Cricket.

Lanning, the premier batter in the world, made an unbeaten 126 at more than a run a ball to lead her Mustangs to a convincing win.

The Bats batted and made a solid 8-213 on the back of an unbeaten 88 from Kate Broadmore.

In reply, the Mustangs chased down the runs with 10 wickets and nearly 15 overs to spare. Georgia Hennessy was unbeaten on 76.

In men’s premier cricket, Greenvale Kangaroos suffered a first-up loss to Carlton.

The Kangaroos were left to rue too many starts from batsmen who didn’t go on with their innings.

Six players made at least 15, but an unbeaten 35 from Michael Rosendale was the highest score in a total of 7-187.

Carlton had no trouble chasing down the total, finishing on 4-188.

In the Diamond Valley Cricket Association, the Barclay Shield match between Bundoora and Epping is evenly poised after day one.

Bundoora looked set for a score in the late 100s to early 200s, before a late batting collapse.

The side went went from 4-115 to all out for 147.

Rubal Singh-Dhillon top scored with 50.

Billy McKewon was the best of the bowlers with four wickets.

In reply, Epping is 2-42 after losing two wickets before stumps.  Anthony Licovski will resume on 18 not out.

Old Paradians/St Francis will be after quick wickets on day two of the match against Macleod. Tailenders Udhara Hewa Wellalage and Gavin Teague helped the Wolves make a competitive 150. They put on 62 for the last wicket after their team  was in trouble at 9-88.

Macleod was 1-12 at stumps.
