Colours of Hume women’s group seeking new members

A group of women is flying the flag for multiculturalism in Hume.

The women are part of Colours of Hume, a fortnightly group that meets to talk about their cultures and learn more about their local community.

The group includes members from Indian, Sri Lankan, Nepalese, Pakistani, Assyrian-Chaldean, Chinese, Afghan and Australian backgrounds.

The women take part in regular activities and discussions designed to enhance wellbeing and increase awareness of pathways to employment.

The group is currently exploring the significant role faith and religion plays in forming cultural identities, and members have been visiting places of worship around Hume, including Yuroke’s Buddhist temple.

Colours of Hume is organised by Dianella Health, Lentara UnitingCare and the Oorja Foundation.

Dianella Health chief executive Dr Neil Cowen described the group as a great initiative.

“[It’s] open to women of all backgrounds to learn about their community, each other and a little bit about what makes us all tick,” he said.

“Culture, belief and ethnicity are common threads to the humanity we share, and understanding our similarities and differences brings everyone closer together.”

Colours of Hume is looking for more women to join the group, which meets at the Newbury Child and Community Centre, 440 Grand Boulevard, Craigieburn, fortnightly on Wednesdays, 10.30am–12.30pm.
