Doreen school students are shutting the door on their car rides to school, opting instead to ride their bikes or scooters as part of a new active travel program.

Launched earlier this month, the healthy travel initiative is being taken up by students from Hazel Glen College and St Paul the Apostle Primary School, who now have safe walking routes to their schools.

Stickers mark out the routes along pathways leading to the schools. The program is funded by Victoria’s Bicycle Network and backed by the state government and Whittlesea council.

Hazel Glen College principal Darryl Furze said he would like as many students as possible to walk, ride or scooter to school every day.

“The active travel program will further encourage students and families to get active and healthy,” he said.

The council has school travel plan kits and active travel networks for schools interested in taking part in the program. Details: 9217 2345
