New mentor program a cut above

Young Brimbank scissor slingers are learning from the best through a new training
program.

As part of a council pilot program, Just Kutz, eight young people are being mentored by experienced barbers to give them a look at an industry that is experiencing a re-birth.

Axe Barbers in Sunshine and Grindstone Barbers at Watergardens Town Centre are working with the budding barbers.

Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said it was important to give those with aspirations in the industry the opportunity to learn.

“We’re excited to be running a mentorship-based program with young people and local businesses in the Brimbank area for the first time,” Cr Giudice said.

“Young people taking part in Just Kutz will have the opportunity to get a feel for the barbershop industry and also gain some useful business skills in a hands-on environment.

“What sets this apart from doing work experience, or even a pre-apprenticeship,
s that the young people will build a relationship with their mentor, who will guide them
through the industry and teach them personal skills.”

Just Kutz was developed in response to a need expressed by young people in Brimbank not interested in school and other education pathways, but interested in barbering.

The program was created for young people aged 16 to 25 who live, work, study or socialise in Brimbank, and recognises the current lack of formal education available in barbering in VCAL and VET.

“It’s a great way to learn more about the business side of the barbershop industry and to pick up a range of useful skills – such as how to present yourself professionally, deliver good customer service and handle money, all of which are useful in just about any career,”
Cr Giudice said.

The program will run thr

ough May.
