October 12, 1977

Werribee Shire Council has set rates for the present financial year which are exactly the same as last year. However the minimum amount which may be paid for any property has been raised from $95 to $100, and garbage and sanitary charges have also been raised marginally. Council fixed the rates on Monday night after two abortive attempts in the past two weeks.

Holiday plans for 12 intellectually handicapped people have gone astray following the theft of $1000 from the Wyndham Centre for Mentally Retarded People. Thieves raided the centre in Ballan Rd, Werribee, last Wednesday night, ransacked the main office and stole a cash tin which contained the money saved for the holiday.

Port Arthur massacre victim Peter Nash, who saved his wife from a hail of bullets by covering her with his body, will be awarded a bravery medal. The Hoppers Crossing resident is one of four Victorians who will be honoured posthumously by Governor General Sir William Deane for their actions during the shooting at the historic penal settlement.

Families are regularly sleeping in cars and friend’s lounge rooms as Wyndham’s housing crisis deepens. Werribee Support and Housing chief executive Carol Muir last week told the Banner the situation was the worst she had experienced since she joined the agency in 1998.
