March 8, 1978

Werribee Shire Council is at present investigating the extent of the need for a Meals on Wheels service to the elderly population of Werribee and Laverton. After considering preliminary research on the need and cost of such a scheme, council resolved to call a meeting of interested organisations in order to obtain some hard facts on the actual need in the district.

Several Hoppers Crossing sporting groups and residents fear new hiring costs at a ball players centre could lead to junior basketball players dropping out of clubs and spending more time on the streets. Werribee Councillor Pat Goodwin is outraged by the increased fees which have stopped many youngsters from using the Hoppers Crossing Post Primary School Ecocentre.

The mayor Councillor Shane Bourke, resident Shirley Ives-Jones and real estate business director Steve Carter were among the first to don breathing masks last week to show just how serious the issue is to the people of Wyndham.

Ten years after the community fought off a plan from the Kennett government to build a toxic dump in Werribee, a federal Liberal MP has nominated the Western Treatment Plant as a potential location for sediment from the Port Phillip Bay dredging project. The proposal was raised by the opposition spokesman on environment and urban water, Greg Hunt, who believes the plant could be used to store sediment generated through the channel deepening process.
