Eureka Clinb: Only way is up for Doreen firefighters

FOR a group of Doreen firefighters this weekend, the only way is up – literally.

The four-member “Doreen CFA 1” team will take part in Australia’s biggest vertical race, the Eureka Climb.

They will run the 1642 stairs to the top of Eureka Tower to raise funds for charity.

First Lieutenant Peter DeMaria, third lieutenant Rod O’Brien and firefighters Steve Temby and Chris Taylor hope to make it to the top in under 15 minutes at 10.30am this Sunday.

“We’ve got to turn out and do it in full [CFA firefighting] gear, so it will be tough,” Mr DeMaria said.

“The only way is up, but hopefully we can catch the lift down.”

The fastest runner last year did the climb in eight minutes and 22 seconds.

The climb raises money for disadvantaged young people, in Australia and overseas, through the Interplast and Whitelion charities. Donations to the Doreen crew can be made through eurekaclimb.com.au.
