Album: Cat Power – Sun

CAT POWER

Sun

Matador Records

Sun isn’t your typical 2012 female indie-pop-rock record. For starters, the legendary Iggy Pop provides guest vocals and some of the lyrics deal with the plight of the Third World.

The cover image of Ms Cat Power (aka Chan Marshall) set against a violet backdrop was taken 20 years ago, and sets the ’80s tone for what is one of the most refreshing albums of the year.

Stung by the break-up of a long-term relationship, Marshall has crafted a vital album that dabbles in electronica and indie rock. Lead single Ruin is an irresistible, rollicking piano number.

The intro of Cherokee recalls the moody guitar of early U2 before giving way to sultry vocals and a skittery chorus. Nothin’ But Time, the Iggy Pop collaboration, is an 11-minute slow-burn epic that never outstays its welcome.

The sweet piano ode to New York, Manhattan, is another highlight on an album that barely has any missteps.
