It may be only a bog to some but it is home – and now a nursery – to the frogs of Mernda.
Mernda Primary School included the frog bog in its grounds when it opened its new facility last year, and frogs soon made it home.
Now the frogs are breeding, and include the threatened growling grass frog and the eastern common froglet.
Teacher Chris Cacoyiannis says the grade 2 pupils collected about 25 tadpoles, which they had on display in their classroom to observe the growth and life cycle of a tadpole as part of a science unit.
‘‘The students have enjoyed the hands-on experience when out by the frog bog and its grass land, trees and rocks,’’ Mr Cacoyiannis said.
