Mentor lends a friendly hand

LEE Weller has no children but plays an important part in one teenager’s life. The IT specialist met the then 14-year-old Travis three years ago through the Kildonan UnitingCare mentoring program in Epping and has made a difference as a solid role model, teaching him to build computers and spending time with him.

Kildonan matches mentors with young people in difficult circumstances, but demand in the northern suburbs is outstripping supply, according to Catalina Fuentes, Kildonan’s youth mentor program coordinator. Mr Weller said mentors were “halfway between a friend who listened and a parental figure who provided guidance”.
