This novel is the latest installment in the Rowland Sinclair adventures. While previous books have held a certain attraction, things may have gone a bit off track with this offering.
This episode has Rowly in Europe on a mission to undermine an Australian Fascist’s rise to power.
Just about everyone turns up — Nancy Wake, Unity Mitford, Eva Braun; and even Hugo Boss plays a supporting part. The entertaining writing would usually have you suspending disbelief about such nonsense, but this time it falls flat. The Sinclair novels have always had unlikely plots but with Paving the New Road Gentill seems to have sacrificed the cast of appealing characters and lively dialogue which made the books so readable. Perhaps this one is only for the dedicated fans.
