NEW statistics have highlighted Plenty Road, Bundoora, as an accident hot spot. Most accidents involved cars hitting other vehicles from behind, according to car insurer AAMI.
The company analysed 275,000 car accident claims across the country over the past year and found Springvale Road in Glen Waverley was the worst stretch of road in Melbourne for crashes.
Plenty Road, Bundoora, rated second highest, where 69 per cent of accidents involved cars hitting others in the rear; 20 per cent involved motorists failing to give way and 5 per cent involved cars hitting stationary objects.
AAMI spokesman Reuben Aitchison blamed carelessness and distraction as some of the causes for accidents. “We see roughly two crashes every single day at Melbourne’s top five crash hot spots,” he said. “If you’re … driving at speed or in high traffic, leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front, concentrate on your driving and expect the unexpected.” Two-thirds of accidents were seen as avoidable, he said.
The other three hot spots in the top five are Bell Street, Preston; Princes Highway, Dandenong; and Sydney Road, Coburg. – Sue Hewitt
