POLICE are targeting motorcyclists in the City of Whittlesea after a rise in accidents involving riders.
Inspector David Griffin, of the Highway Patrol, said Whittlesea had one of the state’s highest number of motorcycle accidents involving injuries and death.
He said 23 per cent of the accidents involved riders aged 40 to 69, and 47 per cent were single-bike accidents where riders had lost control. Most happened about 5pm on Fridays and on Sunday afternoons.
The Highway Patrol will join police in Whittlesea, Kingston, Bayside and Bendigo municipalities for Operation Super Ardent. Motorists will also be monitored. “Speed, especially in the 100km/h zones, continues to be a major problem and is a factor in about one-third of fatal collisions each year,” Mr Griffin said.
