See & Do: what’s on around town

Shimmy and shake

Mums can learn the basics of the ancient art of belly dancing, and bring their kids. The free classes are funded by the federal government, and run on Wednesdays from 10am–11am, with kids’ activities while their mothers learn the moves. The classes are held at the Peter Lalor Secondary College gym, 35 Duncan Road, Lalor. Details: 0409 316 116.

Saintly Sunday

A dragon-slayer and all-round miracle worker will be feted in Lalor this weekend. The medieval San Donato is famous for such miracles as raising the dead and restoring sight to the blind. In Italy, followers hold a feast known as La Festa di San Donato, along with a street parade with effigies. In keeping with tradition, the San Donato Association of Lalor celebrates with a Mass and colourful procession around St Luke’s Church. It is followed by opera performances from Banda Bellini in the church hall, with refreshments afterwards. The free celebration will be held on Sunday, August 5, from 1.30pm to 6pm at St Luke’s Church, 1A David Street, Lalor. Details: 9466 1177.

Getting Wiki with it

First there was Wikipedia, then Wikileaks, now Wikinorthia comes to Whittlesea. Locals can share stories of growing up in the City of Whittlesea through the encyclopedia website Wikinorthia, which documents life in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Family history librarian Liz Pidgeon will show how to add stories to the website (wikinorthia.net.au), such as memories of the 1956 Olympic Games or working in local factories. The free one-hour class is on Tuesday, August 7, from 1.30pm at the Lalor Library, May Road. Details: 9437 8189.

Art for sale

Work by leading local artists goes on show in Whittlesea this week. The works of Thel Cardwell, Marg Towt and Ilma Duncan will also be for sale from August 4 to September 14. The free exhibition will be held at the old Whittlesea Courthouse, corner Church and Beech streets, Whittlesea. Details: 9716 1866.
