Whittlesea crimes drop by a third

THE number of burglaries, thefts from cars and theft of vehicles has fallen in Whittlesea after several arrests.

Inspector Bob Dykstra said there had been a “positive turnaround” for June after the alleged offenders were remanded in custody.

He said residential burglaries had dropped from about 120 a week to 81, thefts from cars had decreased from about 150 to 96 and theft of motor vehicles had dropped from about 95 to 51.

Street robberies were negligible and most residents felt safe in the streets, he said.

Police would soon use automated number plate recognition to detect stolen cars and disqualified drivers in Whittlesea, he said.

Meanwhile, Whittlesea police have scored highly in the National Survey of Community Satisfaction with Policing for the June quarter.

Of those surveyed, 71.1 per cent were satisified with local police, 77.5 per cent had confidence in police, 91 per cent felt safe in their neighbourhood and 79.8 per cent felt safe on public transport during the day.
