WHITE ARROWS

Dry Land Is Not A Myth

Dew Process

WHEN New York four-piece Vampire Weekend burst onto the scene in 2008; they were hailed as one of the most original indie bands in years thanks to their combination of Strokes-esque guitar pop and Paul Simon-style world music.

Los Angeles buzz band White Arrows is the latest in a string of groups that sounds like it has been influenced by Vampire Weekend. The five-piece’s 10-track debut Dry Land is Not a Myth is all dancefloor-filling guitars, electronic bleeps and glitches and tropical sounds; singer Mickey Church’s oft-fragile voice a soother. White Arrows is at its best in songs like single Get Gone; four minutes of catchy beats, thumping drums and a chorus you won’t be able to get out of your head. The band is less interesting when it falls into ‘‘generic guitar band’’ territory (like I Can Go) but for the most part, White Arrows fall into a hypnotic groove that – while not entirely original – is enough to fuel interest in where they head from here.
