LOADED

Mickey Avalon

Shock

MICKEY Avalon’s hard-living lifestyle is all about drugs, booze, sex and partying. He might be a walking cliche if he didn’t manage to harness these experiences into some surprisingly fluid, creative hip hop.

On Loaded, the Hollywood-based rapper produces energetic, bass-laden tracks that are riddled with steamy, sticky beats and sleazy tales of hooking up, getting high and stumbling out of nightclubs smelling of nicotine and sweat.

While this is usually irksome and exhausting, Avalon has a redeeming quality and that is his writing: it’s catchy, frenzied and fun. The simple, rap-by-numbers approach to his lyrics are closer to a pop formula, especially in the mischievous Girlfriend, the sexy I’m Hot and the robotic Drugs. It may be nasty, dirty and manic at times, but this is still a dizzying record that responds to more than one primal urge.
