Community urged to ‘dob in a vandal’

Vandals have a new enemy – the community, according to police.

Police are calling on residents to dob in petty criminals who vandalise public and private property.

Leading Senior Constable Sandra O’Connor said the cost of the damage caused could not be calculated exactly, but was an enormous drain on Whittlesea council, other government bodies and individuals.

”We constantly see broken windows, motor vehicles being damaged, bus shelters being vandalised, rubbish bins being targeted or vandalism in the form of graffiti,” she said.

“It is extremely disappointing to see the lack of respect some people have for our community.

“Bus stops are used by the public and are erected for the public’s benefit. There is nothing to be gained by damaging them.

“We need to address the issue of criminal damage and graffiti as a community, and only then can we make any real difference.”

Senior Constable O’Connor called on the public to report vandals to police, the emergency 000 number or anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“Take note of the offenders and if they have a vehicle, note the registration number, make, model, colour and note the direction they are heading,” she said.
