As a member of the Wild Divas, Maritah Enosa of Epping has enjoyed experiences that would be the envy of most 22-year-olds.
Inspired by the likes of the Pointer Sisters and the Supremes, the quartet has sung at venues such as Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Museum and Federation Square.
“The way people react when they see us on stage, I just get this excited feeling,” says Enosa, who is vision impaired.
“People come and ask if their daughters can join the Wild Divas and if they can get free tickets.” The performances are made possible by Wild@ heART, a Melbourne organistion that provides creative respite for people with a disability or mental health issues.
Wild Divas is just one of many groups created by Wild@heART, with DJs, a gospel choir and hip hop outfit also supported by the the non-profit organisation.
Enosa is also participating in Wild@heART’s Suitable workshops, which involve drawing, animation, digital music and video culminating in a live performance.
“I enjoy the workshops because it’s an opportunity for me to participate in my community and to try something different,” Enosa says.
The program is for anyone in Whittlesea with a disability.
Similar programs are run throughout Melbourne, with hundreds of participants attending a recent dance workshop.
Organisers expect an upcoming dance party to be as successful.
The dance party is held twice a year and gives partygoers the chance to let their hair down with friends and family, dancing to a range of styles from around the world, including African, Latin, hip hop, the Time Warp and the macarena.
“It’s extremely important for this community to get together and have a bit of fun,” Enosa says.
“It’s all about the social side of things, dancing with friends and connecting together as a community.”
The dance party is on June 23 from 6–10pm at the Arts House, North Melbourne Town Hall.
