Women urged: Stand up for council roles

SEVEN hundred women across Victoria are being asked to nominate for this year’s local government elections in a bid to boost numbers.

The Think Women For Local Government campaign was launched at Parliament House last week.

Across the state, women make up 51 per cent of the population, however only 29 per cent of councillors are female. Three out of nine Whittlesea councillors are female.

The Victorian Local Governance Association wants female candidates in 90 per cent of wards this year. VLGA president Samantha Dunn said the number of female councillors actually fell after the 2008 election, with no female candidates standing in 25 per cent of wards.

“In the lead up to the 2012 elections, it’s sobering to note that there are five local governments with no women councillors at all and 14 with only one woman on board,” she said. “This time round, we’re determined to narrow the gap.”

Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said women offered an important difference to their male counterparts. “Women have different life experiences, different expectations and attributes that are also needed around the decision-making table.”

The campaign will offer support for women thinking about nominating, including hosting workshops. Of the state’s 79 councils, 78 will hold elections on October 27. Nominations open September 24. Details: visit vec.vic.gov.au.
