THE state government is overhauling scores of suburban train stations and adding more myki readers in a bid to reduce exit queues – but commuters using four of the city’s busiest stations will have to wait.
Work has started on installing 150 more myki readers at 65
suburban stations. Some of the
stations will also be renovated to remove bottlenecks at exits.
Lalor, Bell and Keon Park are on a list of stations on the South Morang line set to be upgraded.
Although South Yarra, Caulfield, Box Hill and Glenferrie were included in a Transport Ticketing Authority list of the 10 busiest
stations for February, work on them is not scheduled to begin until later this year.
The government has already installed extra readers and reconfigured 51 suburban stations, including Clifton Hill and Preston.
Public Transport Users Association President Daniel Bowen said the changes made sense.
“The train network is getting busier and not just at peak times.”
