MOMENTS that capture the intimacy and intensity of human relationships form the basis of Sydney Dance Company’s 2 One Another, which is one of eight works presented in the Australian Ballet’s latest production, Let’s Dance.

Performed as part of the company’s 50th anniversary performances, 2 One Another is a contemporary work choreographed by Rafael Bonachela. It began with the concept of being born into the world with nothing and the things that shape our experience thereafter. “I think the scope of the work is very broad – there are a lot of quiet, personal and tender moments that happen within the piece, and then there are also ballistic, spectacular moments,” says dancer Richard Cilli.

“2 One Another not only relates to people’s relationships to one another [but also examines] the duet, the solo and as a group – all three of those are represented.

Cilli has performed contemporary dance since he was 12, and attended his first ballet class at 19. “It allowed me to be creative and express myself in a way no other dance form would allow,” he says.

The dancer then joined Sydney Dance Company in 2009. “We work very hard on the fine detail and work to get complex movement in really close unison,” he says. “It’s one of the things we pride ourselves on.”

2 One Another premiered in Sydney in March and is among the works from Australia’s leading companies represented in Let’s Dance. “It’s such a rare happening that we get to see an amazing snapshot of what’s going on in dance in Australia,” Cilli says. “It’s going to highlight what’s special and unique about dance in Australia.”
