SOUTH Doreen Primary School will be built on land that was earmarked for a secondary school on Cookes Road, the education department has confirmed.
But it will use only part of the land, leaving room for a secondary school to be built in the future when funding is available.
A senior employee in the education department’s northern metropolitan region office said the sale of the land on Cookes Road was all but completed, and the last details were
being negotiated. The site had overall capacity for both a primary and a secondary school, the employee said.
The state government stunned the community with its unexpected budget decision to grant $10 million funding for a new primary school in Doreen South, despite residents campaigning hard for a secondary school.
Sarah Lee, of the Secondary School for 3754 Action Group, said she would not be happy with the Cookes Road site being used for a primary school unless it was certain a secondary school would be built there as well.
“If the site’s big enough for a prep to 12… it’s OK.
“But we need somewhere for these teenage kids to go, and soon.”
