WHEN it comes to the population boom in the northern suburbs, Northern Hospital’s maternity ward is where it all begins.
The hospital last week claimed a birthing record, with 20 babies born in 22 hours.
Between 4am last Tuesday and 2am last Wednesday, 12 boys and eight girls made their entrance into the world at Northern.
The hospital’s last record was 15 on March 8 this year, and its average number of births a day is nine. From July 1 2010 to April last year, 1965 babies were born at Northern Hospital; 2194 were born in the same period this year.
Northern Health chief executive Greg Pullen says staff are always honoured to share the experience.
“We were proud to see 2407 babies born at The Northern Hospital last year, and we expect this number to grow by 10 to 15 per cent in 2012,” he says. “I’d also like to wish all mothers a happy Mother’s Day.”
