MORE Whittlesea residents are riding to work, preliminary data from a Bicycle Network count shows.
Last month, bike counters spent two hours recording data during the morning peak at more than 700 Victorian locations.
Early findings released to NW show a 24 per cent increase in riders in the Whittlesea area. Counters monitored riders on the Plenty Road off-street path heading towards RMIT and the M80 Ring Road path towards Greensborough. The number of riders on the M80 path doubled within a year.
Bicycle Network Victoria Bike Futures manager Mike Williamson said the findings backed the idea that once the bike infrastructure was in place, people would use it.
The data also shows that city-bound bike traffic through points in Brunswick, Richmond and Carlton was up by more than 20 per cent since last year.
The increase in the Darebin council area was 10 per cent where St Georges Road meets Charles Street and Merri Parade.
