THE newly formed Doreen Country Women’s Association has won its battle to hold a monthly market at Hilltop Park in Laurimar.
The first market was almost cancelled after a council officer refused to approve it, president Kate Finlay said. ‘‘I had to personally guarantee that no damage to the park would occur. There had been residential complaints about traffic, parking and noise, but the first market (on Sunday, August 26) went off smoothly and now we have a monthly booking for the last Sunday of every month.’’
Secretary Melanie Osmond said the group had greater aims than making pumpkin scones.
‘‘We like the values of the CWA, of learning and sharing skills and giving back to the community. We raise money for the community and for international projects, or we make things like pinafores for children in orphanages in Thailand.’’
