For every item of cutlery 10-year-old Laura lays on the table, her mother Karen gives her five cents as pocket money.
The same goes for every chore she helps Karen with around the house, from folding the laundry and emptying the dishwasher to matching odd socks and vacuuming her bedroom.
“I’m trying to teach her the value of money,” Karen said.
Laura plans to save her pennies to buy a car when she turns 18, and her saving techniques haven’t gone unnoticed.
The Bundoora resident was last week named the winner of CommBank’s Search for Australia’s Smart School Savers competition.
The national competition called for school children to share their savings goals and gave advice for achieving them. The St Francis of Assisi Primary School pupil won an iPad for herself and one for the school.
