Hume council will invest $900,000 over the next three years to improve housing diversity, streets and public spaces and provide local jobs in Broadmeadows, Dallas and Jacana.
The Together 3047 initiative was launched at Broadmeadows Community Hub on November 20 and is a neighbourhood-based program that aims to provide social equality to the areas in Hume considered vulnerable.
Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said help was needed not only from local community participation but from state and federal governments to ensure the initiative’s success.
“We can’t affect change on our own and I call on both the state and federal governments to come to the table,” Cr Atmaca said.
“Together we can make a real difference to people’s lives.
“If we don’t, we will be facing a certain social catastrophe.”
The program will be developed in conjunction with businesses and local residents to offer diverse and reliable employment opportunities that will reduce social disadvantage and deliver long-term change.
“Unfortunately there is a high level of disadvantage in the 3047 postcode area, that’s why council is doing its part to deliver programs and initiatives to the community in greatest need,” Cr Atmaca said.
Working on behalf of the community, Hume City Council will also conduct a street and area ‘blitz project’ as part of Together 3047.
It will focus on footpath repairs, nature strip maintenance, hard rubbish and graffiti removal. These changes will be implemented with community help in the decision-making process and it is hoped it will encourage community pride through the improved appearance and cleanliness in each of the three suburbs.
The initiative will also work towards providing stable, high quality and affordable housing options that ensure safety for all residents and contribute towards a strong local economy.
