A golfing celebration in Yan Yean last week raised more than $22,000 for a program that helps victims of family violence.
Growling Frog Golf Club hosted the annual Governor’s Charity Golf Day last Tuesday, on White Ribbon Day, helping to raise awareness and prevent male violence against women.
Sponsors and 17 teams of four golfers raised $22,700 for the Salvation Army’s Crossroads Safe at Home program, which helps keep victims of family violence safe in their own homes.
Among the players was the event’s patron, Governor Alex Chernov, who donned his golfing attire to play 18 holes alongside Whittlesea mayor Ricky Kirkham.
Money raised will be used to buy Safe T Card System devices, which help protect wearers against stalking, intervention order breaches and other threatening behaviours.
The devices were designed to protect isolated or lone workers but increasingly are being used as a domestic violence safety tool.
Cr Kirkham said family violence was the municipality’s top advocacy priority.
“Family violence is everyone’s business,” he said.
“The City of Whittlesea has one of the highest reporting rates for family violence in Victoria.
“As a community, we all have a role to play to ensure all women and children live free from family violence.”
