Calder Cannons’ Matthew Goodyear was unsure what to expect on draft night.
The Gisborne footballer had been mentioned by experts as a potential pick in the draft, but he wasn’t so sure he would find his way onto a list.
“I had no idea what would happen,” Goodyear said following the draft.
“I was with my mum, dad, sister, brother and girlfriend at home watching it.”
The Mount Macedon resident didn’t have to wait long, with Collingwood taking him at pick 48.
He was the second Gisborne footballer drafted on the night, after Patrick McKenna was selected at pick 23.
“I was over the moon and just stoked,” Goodyear said.
“I got hit by a wave of emotions.
“I had spoken to them earlier in the year, but not around the draft. I had no idea they would take me.”
Goodyear has made his name as an inside footballer, who can find plenty of the ball.
He represented Vic Metro at the National Championships.
For the midfielder, it was a bonus to remain in Melbourne.
Six of his Cannons’ mates will have to move interstate to start their AFL careers.
“It is a bonus staying in Melbourne. Heading into the draft I just wanted to have my name called out.
“I couldn’t think of a better club to go to.”
