AFL draft: Two Calder Cannons in top 10, eight picked up in total

Calder Cannons stars Paul Ahern and Peter Wright are off to Greater Western Sydney and Gold Coast respectively after being taken in the top 10 in the AFL draft on Thursday night.

The two are among eight Cannons who found their way onto AFL lists at the draft.

Ahern was the first of the Cannons to be drafted, taken by GWS at pick seven.

The midfielder, from Keilor, can also play forward and saves his best for the big games. He starred in the national carnival and led from the front in the Cannons’ grand final loss.

Wright was taken the next pick by Gold Coast.

Touted as a possible number one draft pick earlier in the season, Wright adds to the Suns renowned tall timber.

At 203 centimetres, he can play forward and in the ruck.

Ex-cricketer Pat McKenna off to GWS

Defender Jake Lever was the next Cannon selected at pick 14.

The Romsey junior, who didn’t play this season due to a knee injury, will make the trip across the border to Adelaide.

Cannons-listed player Patrick McKenna was selected in the biggest shock of the night.

After spending the year playing cricket, McKenna decided he would focus on his footy and GWS snapped him up at pick 23.

The goalkicker played for Gisborne in the Bendigo Football League this season and if he wasn’t drafted was set to play with the Cannons next season as a 19-year-old.

Vic Metro captain Touk Miller is joining Wright at the Suns, after being selected at pick 29.

Miller averaged 22 possessions a game in the TAC Cup.

Gisborne junior Matthew Goodyear gets to stay in his home state, being picked up by Collingwood at pick 48.

He is known for his inside game and was in the top 10 for contested possession in the TAC Cup.

Jayden Foster, who the Western Bulldogs passed over as a father-son pick, was taken by Carlton at pick 63.

Foster, the TAC Cup’s leading goal kicker, will provide some much-needed goal scoring power for the Blues.

The last of the Cannons boys to be selected was Damian Cavka.

Picked later than expected, Cavka is heading to West Coast after being selected at 66.

Peter Wright is off to the Gold Coast.
