Many hands at work in Sunbury for African communities

A charity which equips African communities with the knowledge to provide for thousands of underprivileged children will benefit from a charity auction to be held in Sunbury.

Jessica Wilson, who has twice been to South Africa to support Hands at Work, is urging people to support the fundraiser at Sunbury Baptist Church on Saturday, December 6.

More than $13,000 worth of donated items, including a dirt bike, will go under the hammer.

Ms Wilson, who lives near Lancefield, said every cent of the profits would go to the non-profit organisation.

She said her experience working with African children, many orphaned by AIDS, had a profound impact.

‘‘There are moments when you’re working in communities with 99 per cent unemployment and children are dying, and there are 100 kids around you, and you think ‘this is the worst place on earth’,’’ Ms Wilson said.

‘‘But you can’t let it get to you. You have to do what you’re there to do so they can get help.’’

Ms Wilson said she worked with an eight-year-old from Mozambique whose mother left for days looking for work and food.

The Sunbury event will include a jumping castle, sausage sizzle, giveaways and free family entertainment from 5pm. Registration is $5, the auction starts at 7pm.
