Doreen: Labor pledges $1.6m community ‘hub’ for families

A $1.6million community hub for children and families will be built in Doreen if the Labor Party wins this month’s state election.

Labor Yan Yean MP Danielle Green and opposition spokeswoman for children andyoung adults Jenny Mikakos were at Laurimar Community Activity Centre last Wednesday to reveal Labor’s plans for the Ashley Park Community Hub.

The centre would be built as a one-stop shop for young families with integrated kindergarten, maternal and child health and early intervention services, as well as meeting rooms.

The project is part of Labor’s campaign to make Victoria the “education state” through a $1.3 billion education and skills package.

Ms Mikakos said Labor would support young families and their kids as they began the most important years of their lives. “Learning and playing in new, safe buildings with caring staff makes a big difference in both the mind of every parent and the future of every child.”

The Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development, Wendy Lovell, and the Liberal Party candidate for Yan Yean, Sam Ozturk, recently announced a $2 million grant to build an early learning centre on the site of the planned Mernda South Primary School.

The centre would feature a three-room kindergarten, long day care, maternal and child health services and space for playgroups.
