Tradition that’s a sweet treat

Australian troops deployed overseas have been tucking into Heatherbrae Shortbreads since 1941, says Bass Wakim, owner of the Thomastown business.

It’s a tradition that’s been maintained through generations.

“We have mothers of men and women who are serving Australia overseas come into our shop to buy biscuits for them,” Bass says.

“Not only is this a tribute to our products, but it says something for people’s connection with our brand. And we have products flying around the world via airlines such as Qantas and Virgin Australia.”

Heatherbrae Shortbreads has been in the hands of just three other owners since its inception.

Bass’s family has been at the helm for 25 years.

It’s the place, Bass claims, for local cafe owners, caterers and school fundraisers to shop for goodies.

The factory outlet is also a favourite with local bargain hunters.

“We bake the country’s favourite shortbreads and bakery treats using quality, Australian-made ingredients,” he says. “Our premium range, Heatherbrae Cafe, has even higher-quality ingredients than our other products.

“Our open-to-the-public factory shop is a hit for cafe owners, hot bread shops and for families looking for a bargain. Pies, pastries and sausage rolls, as well as our new Christmas shortbread range, are now available. All our sweets are made in our modern bakery on site.”

The shortbread specialist’s home-style treats include gluten-free products; fruit mince, lemon, jam and Neenish tarts; tart shells; chocolate fingers; melting moments; a large range of cookies; meringues; and slices, such as raspberry crumble and rocky road.

“We are small enough to react quickly to change but large enough to service national customers,” Bass says.

“Our longstanding team of 35 local employees is committed to providing the best bakery treats available.”
