Pupils from Meadows Primary School chose to paint their life-size model cow with a vivid blue udder and ‘green pastures’ on her flank as they learned about the Australian dairy industry.
As it turned out, their artwork captured the essence of Dairy Australia’s educational program, and earlier this month the primary school was named regional winner of DA’s Picasso Cows competition.
The lifeless but vibrant cow, Bara Povi Inek (which means cow in Arabic, Samoan and Turkish), was painted in several sessions over the past two months.
She was one of 57 fibreglass cows sent to Australian schools involved in Dairy Australia’s educational program.
Meadows Primary School teacher Ainslie Gerritsen said their ‘Farm to Plate’ theme was a great focal point for learning about the dairy industry as a whole.
Teachers and more than 200 students gathered at Heidelberg Golf Club this month to showcase their cows and hear the local winner announced.
The staff and pupils walked away with a $250 cash prize and a new-found understanding that milk doesn’t come from the supermarket and that brown cows don’t produce chocolate milk.
