Kangan Institute culinary champion Charith Jayaweera is off to Adelaide next Monday to compete in the AusTAFE national finals after taking out the state’s top student award.
Mr Jayaweera, a former nurse, says he chose to pursue a career as a chef after a sudden realisation that life was short, so it was best that he follow his passion.
About 80 students and apprentices from the state’s TAFEs and training agencies tested their culinary skills in the battle for top spot.
Broadmeadows-based apprentices and students claimed a number of medals over the course of this month’s four-day cook-off.
From this week, people can savour the flavours of the Kangan creators at Bookmark 3047, a new café at Hume Global Learning Centre.
A partnership between Hume council and Kangan, Bookmark 3047 will offer a seasonal menu of healthy breakfasts and lunches.
