Colour and movement, bright lights and brilliant performances are coming together as Melbourne’s north gets ready for its first Diwali festival later this month.
Tabla (small hand drums used in Indian music) percussion and a line-up of Bollywood beauties will swirl in unison with more classical, but just as colourful, traditional dancers and musicians.
Classical dance teacher Sushamol Suresh brought out the stars of her Skanda Matha School of Dance and Music last week for a preview of what’s in store on October 25 at Mernda’s Buttercross Park.
They were joined by drummers from the Melbourne Star Chendamelam. (Chendamelam is a traditional drumming style in Kerala, southern India.)
The Diwali, or festival of lights, will be a first for Mernda. Organising it is the Mernda and Doreen Multicultural Association, with support from Whittlesea council and a host of local businesses and organisations.
