Greenvale United’s quest to be state league 5 soccer champion has fallen short.
The Panthers, who finished top of state league 5 north, were downed by state |eague 5 west winners Keilor Wolves on Friday at the State Football Centre in Thornbury.
It looked like the match was heading to extra time with the teams tied 1-1 in the dying minutes.
That’s when the Wolves’ Deni Najdovski struck.
Najdovski put home a strong header to give the Wolves a second goal and the win.
The Wolves will face Eltham Redbacks for the state league 5 championship, after the Redbacks defeated Dandenong South 6-1 in the east-versus-south state league 5 playoff.
In the state league 4 north-west playoff, Hoppers Crossing downed Upfield.
Upfield’s opening goal was matched before half time by Hoppers.
But it was Hoppers Crossing that came out the better team in the second half, scoring three goals in a dominant display for its 4-1 win.
Hoppers Crossing will face Croydon City Arrows who beat St Kilda 3-1 in a playoff between the state league 4 south and east champions.
The finals to determine the state league 4 and 5 champions will be played on Saturday at Jubilee Park, Ringwood.
